Please note: none of the Mendocino County state parks have lifeguards on duty. Remember that you swim at your own risk and supervise children at all times. Remember that the beauty of the Mendocino coast is tempered by its unpredictability and danger.

 

Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area

At the base of rocky outcrops, the South Fork of the Eel River has one of the best swimming holes in the state. Deep and sunny, it’s a pleasant place to relax on hot summer days. No diving or jumping into the river. Stay away from steep and dangerous bluffs. No lifeguards are on duty; children should be supervised at all times.

Check at the park entrance to see if blue-green algae toxins are at dangerous levels, which are occasionally reached during drought years. 


Caspar State Beach

A good beach for swimming and surfing, but be cautious about rough surf. No lifeguard on duty.


Greenwood State Beach

Swimming, windsurfing, and surfing are allowed but remember there is no lifeguard on duty. 

This area is also used for scuba diving and snorkeling.


Hendy woods state park

Swimming is popular in summer under the Greenwood Road bridge. Visitors can wade in the river from the day-use area. Use caution and wear covered water shoes. No lifeguards are present.


manchester state park

Experienced, certified scuba divers may dive from their boats near Arena Rock, part of the Point Arena State Marine Reserve. Shore diving in the turbulent water is not advised.


Mendocino headlands state park

Swimming and surfing are allowed but remember there is no lifeguard on duty. 

This area is also used for scuba diving and snorkeling.


Navarro river redwoods state park

Swimming and wading are popular in summer.


RUssian Gulch state park

Russian Gulch State Park offers swimming from a beach at the mouth of Russian Gulch Creek.

Tide pool exploring, scuba diving, and free diving are also popular here.


Westport-Union Landing State Beach

This area is open for scuba diving and snorkeling, as well as surfing and windsurfing.
